Head Trip

Postby Blackcloud » Fri Aug 28, 2009 5:33 pm

Ok, this isn't really a review, but sorta is.
I ordered a Head Trip helmet from Advanced Carbon Composites. Daytona helmets say they are the smallest DOT helmet, but these are actually a bit smaller and they are DOT certified. They are true carbon fiber but they are also Kevlar (50/50). Because of that hard shell, they don't have to have as thick of a liner. Maybe not the "best" helmet you can buy, but if you like wearing novelty helmets, this is just very slightly larger than that, and satisfies the DOT requirement. So, I've only ridden up and down the road a small bit, but it feels good so far. I took it to work for "show and tell" to show my buds what I bought. They liked it and one of them really wants to buy one. Well, there it is. If I find out its fantastic, I will report that. If I find out it sucks, I will report that too.

Yeah ya don't need to pay a fine for fake helmets.

However, I still don't see where it's anybody's business if I have a helmet or not. I'm not raising anyone's health costs because I PAY MY OWN INSURANCE AND I DON'T EXPECT OR REQUIRE THE GOVERNMENT OR ANYONE ELSE TO PAY MY WAY FOR ME.

Phew - thanks. That felt good.

Ok, here's a bit of a report. I've worn it several times now. Can't complain about anything. For my head, this particular helmet is a bit snug front to rear, but that's not the helmet's fault, it's more a product of my oval head shape.
I did get a compliment from a buddy. He pulled up next to me and said it was the first helmet that didn't make me look like a bobble head. I'm not a large man. Hell, I'm not even average sized. Most helmets look like I'm wearing a cooler on my head. Not this one. It damn near looks like a novelty. So much so that I emailed Head Trip and asked for a copy of the certification documentation from the testing lab. They kindly and promptly emailed me a copy. Now, if I get pulled over, or.... if I am denied access to where I work (by the gate guards who are not allowed to admit entry without a DOT helmet) I can show them that it DID pass FMVSS218 testing criteria. I give it a thumbs up!

Okay now I have a visual of a bobble head on a Harley!

I have never liked wearing a helmet but do because the law demands it. Is it because I am old school? No. It is because I have very sensitive areas behind my ears so when I wore a full helmet it pressed against that area and caused me to get bad headaches. I then decided to get a helmet that was a bit looser. Bad idea, the air got in and it would pull my head back when riding. OUCH! Soooo then I ran into a helmet that was a cops helmet - not quite a skull cap type but not a full helmet. This worked! But as the years passed it needed replaced so my husband surprised me with a beautiful black helmet very similar to the old one that needed to be replaced .. that has the beloved DOT approval and doesn't cause headaches.

I have a helment it is ..ah somewhere in the garage in the pile of stuff that covers from floor to ceiling (except the area reserved for bike parking. I would tell you what kind and how it fit except I don't remember because it has been too long since I've worn it. I have a hard time putting any faith in a helment when the manufactor tells you to replace it if it falls 3 feet from the saddle to the ground. If you paint it, it is ruined, replace it. If it is old (2 yrs or more) replace it. But it will protect you at 85 mph? Please protect me from the laws that want to protect me. I don't wear a seat belt either. If it's your time your going if not then you will still be here.
